The short answer
Orange stains on a driveway that follow your sprinkler spray are irrigation rust: iron in the irrigation water that oxidized on the concrete. Concrete is porous, so the iron settles in. It takes a rust remover that dissolves the iron, sometimes more than one pass on old staining, followed by a thorough rinse. Pressure washing alone usually just lightens it.
Is it irrigation rust or something else?
Not every orange mark on a driveway comes from the sprinklers. The pattern tells you:
- Irrigation rust forms a broad band or fan along the edge of the driveway, matching the spray pattern, and it gets worse over months.
- Fertilizer stains show up as small orange speckles or dots where granules containing iron landed on the concrete.
- Metal rust takes the shape of the object that caused it: a furniture leg, a planter, a tool left out.
All three are iron, so all three respond to a rust treatment. But only irrigation rust keeps coming back from the water itself.
How driveway rust is removed
- Protect the lawn and beds along the edges of the driveway.
- Apply a rust remover made for iron stains on concrete, and let it work.
- Rinse thoroughly. Heavy or years-old staining can need a second pass.
Keep the product off cars, and don’t do it in the rain, which dilutes it.
Why more pressure makes it worse
When orange doesn’t come off, the temptation is to turn up the pressure. On concrete, that can leave permanent wand marks and etch the surface, which then holds new staining even faster. Here’s why pressure washing doesn’t remove sprinkler rust.
Should you seal the driveway afterward?
Sealing can make concrete easier to clean, but it doesn’t stop iron-rich water from staining it. If the sprinklers still hit the driveway with well water, the orange will form on top of the sealer. The water is what needs to change.
Keeping the driveway clean
- Adjust heads so they water the lawn, not the concrete.
- If your irrigation comes from a private well, consider rust prevention, which treats the water every time the sprinklers run.
